7 min read

Two e-learning platforms dominate the African education market. Which one suits your institution best according to your size, connectivity and budget?

What is an LMS?

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a platform that allows teachers to:

  • Create and share digital courses
  • Assign and collect homework online
  • Track student progress
  • Organise quizzes and assessments
  • Communicate with students and parents

In Cameroon, two platforms dominate: Moodle and Google Classroom.

Moodle: the open-source heavyweight

What is Moodle?

Moodle is a free, open-source platform used by over 300 million users worldwide, including many African universities and high schools.

Advantages

  • Completely free (open-source licence)
  • Extremely customisable: adapt the interface to your brand
  • Very complete: courses, quizzes, forums, certifications, virtual classes
  • Works offline: some content can be downloaded
  • No dependency on a third party: you host your own data

Disadvantages

  • Complex to set up: requires a server and technical expertise to install
  • Less intuitive: teachers need 2 to 3 days of training minimum
  • Heavy interface: less pleasant on mobile

Ideal for

  • High schools and universities with more than 300 students
  • Institutions that want full control over their data
  • Schools that want to deliver certified courses

Google Classroom: simplicity at its peak

What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is an online learning management solution, included in Google Workspace for Education (free for schools).

Advantages

  • Extremely simple: a teacher can get started in 2 hours
  • Excellent mobile experience: apps iOS and Android, very fluid
  • Integration with Google tools: Docs, Sheets, Meet, Drive natively integrated
  • Free for educational institutions: Google Workspace for Education is free
  • Reliable: Google infrastructure, 99.9% uptime

Disadvantages

  • Less customisable: you depend on what Google offers
  • Requires permanent internet: no offline mode
  • Less complete: no built-in certifications, limited quizzes
  • Data hosted by Google: less control over your institution's data

Ideal for

  • Primary schools and colleges
  • Teachers who are new to digital tools
  • Institutions with reliable internet connectivity
  • Schools that already use Google tools (Gmail, Drive)

The Unadresse recommendation by profile

Primary school (< 500 students)

Google Classroom: simplicity for teachers, excellent parental experience on mobile

College & high school (500-1,500 students)

Moodle or Google Classroom depending on your ambitions. If you want digital certifications and advanced course management: Moodle. If you prioritise ease of use: Google Classroom.

University & grande école (> 1,500 students)

Moodle: the power and customisation needed for higher education, validated courses and official certifications.

Variable connectivity (rural zones, power cuts)

Moodle with offline content, students can download courses when connected and consult them later.

The hybrid approach

Some of our clients use both:

  • Google Classroom for daily communication and homework
  • Moodle for official certified courses and examinations

This approach is more complex to manage but offers the best of both worlds.
